Adhering the membrane
Firestone RubberCover™ EPDM membranes must always be fully adhered to the substrate by applying RubberCover™ Bonding Adhesive both to the membrane and the substrate. Compatible substrates are wood, bitumen, PIR and PUR insulation, concrete, aluminum and zinc. Firestone RubberCover™ EPDM membranes can be installed on both new and existing roofs.
Firestone RubberCover™ EPDM can overlay virtually any old roof provided the roof decking is sound and the existing structure can carry the load of the new roofing system.
- Step 1:
- Position the membrane on the substrate.
- Let it relax for 30 minutes.
- Fold back half of the membrane.
- Step 2:
- Apply RubberCover™ Bonding Adhesive to the underside of the folded membrane.
- Apply RubberCover™ Bonding Adhesive to the substrate to be covered.
- Step 3:
- Let both surfaces dry until adhesive no longer sticks to the finger when touched.
- Step 4:
- Roll the membrane onto the substrate.
- Sweep with a soft brush.
- Repeat these steps for the other half of the membrane.
On site seaming
Firestone RubberCover™ EPDM membranes are available in large, seamless sheets so that most small
residential roofs can be covered with one single sheet. If there is a need to splice two adjoining EPDM membranes
on site, this can be performed with the use of RubberCover™, QuickPrime Plus and RubberCover™ QuickSeam Batten Cover Strip.
Do not leave space between adjacent EPDM membranes (a slight overlap is allowed).
- Step 1:
- Apply RubberCover™ QuickPrime Plus to both sides of the joint to a total width of 20 cm.
- Wait until the primer is dry to the touch.
- Step 2:
- Remove a piece of the release paper from the RubberCover™ QuickSeam Cover Strip.
- Position it over the seam area treated with RubberCover™ QuickPrime Plus.
- Pull the release paper at a 45° angle from under the RubberCover™ QuickSeam Cover Strip.
- Adhere the strip to the membrane with a flat hand. Make sure no air bubbles are trapped inside.
- Step 3:
- Roll the strip with a hand roller, rolling at right angles over the seam.
Inside corners
- Step 1:
- Adhere the membrane with RubberCover™ Bonding Adhesive to the upstand and on top of the roof edge.
- Step 2:
- Roll the excess membrane towards the corner and fold it into a pig-ear.
- Step 3:
- Fold the membrane flat onto the roof edge.
- Finish the edge with roof trim (see edge finishing).
- Trim off excess membrane.
Outside corners/skylights
- Step 1:
- Cut the membrane from top to bottom up to the base at the external corner.
- Adhere the membrane with RubberCover™ Bonding Adhesive to the upstand.
- Apply RubberCover™ QuickPrime Plus across 10 cm on both sides and allow to dry.
- Step 2:
- Adhere a piece of RubberCover™ QuickSeam SA Flashing up to the base.
- Step 3:
- Apply a new layer of RubberCover™ QuickPrime Plus.
- Step 4:
- Remove the release paper from the RubberCover™ QuickSeam Corner Flashing and adhere it to the upstand.
- Step 5:
- Press on with a hand roller.
Vents/penetrations
- Step 1:
- Apply RubberCover™ QuickPrime Plus to the membrane (min. 10 cm around vent) and to the flange of the vent.
- Allow to dry.
- Step 2:
- Cut a hole in the RubberCover™ QuickSeam SA Flashing strip to the size of the vent.
- Step 3:
- Position the RubberCover™ QuickSeam SA Flashing over the vent.
- Remove the release paper.
- Press the Flashing into the primer with your hand.
- Step 4:
- Roll on with a hand roller.
Rainwater drainpipes (RDP)
- Step 1:
- Place the RDP and press firmly in the slope angle.
- Screw it tight to the substrate.
- Apply RubberCover™ QuickPrime Plus to the top of the RDP and at least 10 cm around the RDP.
- Allow to dry.
- Step 2:
- Adhere RubberCover™ QuickSeam SA Flashing over the RDP and onto the membrane.
Note: The strip should overlap the edges of the RDP by at least 5 cm in all directions.
- Adhere RubberCover™ QuickSeam SA Flashing over the RDP and onto the membrane.
- Step 3:
- Roll on with hand roller.
- Step 4:
- Cut an opening in the RubberCover™ QuickSeam SA Flashing strip to the size of the RDP.
Edge finishing
- Step 1:
- Place the roof trim on the roof edge.
- Step 2:
- Attach the roof trim using stainless steel screws and neoprene rings.
Gutter
- Step 1:
- Apply RubberCover™ QuickPrime Plus to the gutter surface.
- Allow to dry.
- Step 2:
- Adhere the RubberCover™ QuickSeam SA Flashing to the gutter.
- Roll on with a hand roller.
